Proteas Reset Their White-Ball Plans for Australia

Bavuma steps back into the ODI picture

South Africa open a three-match one-day series against Australia in Durban on September 24, with Temba Bavuma returning to the 50-over side for the first time since December 2025. The fixture list also begins a crucial stretch of ODI cricket that will help shape South Africa’s thinking for the 2027 home World Cup, which they will co-host with Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Bavuma said the group is intent on protecting its recent ODI progress while also enjoying the chance to be back together on the field. He described the gap since his last 50-over appearance as unusually long and said he is simply looking forward to being involved again.

Experienced names return at a useful time

South Africa have recalled several senior players for the series, including Aiden Markram, Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, David Miller, Corbin Bosch and Quinton de Kock. The squad looks notably different from the group used in the recent ODI series against Namibia.

Head coach Shukri Conrad framed the selection as part of a broader World Cup build-up, saying this stage of the home season offers a chance to test combinations and give players opportunities later against Bangladesh and England. South Africa could play as many as nine ODIs over the next four months, and Conrad views that run as an important part of narrowing down the final tournament core.

Bavuma also indicated that the spine of the side is already fairly clear, with only a limited amount of change expected before the end of the cycle against England. By that stage, he suggested, the squad should be much closer to the group South Africa will trust for the World Cup.

Top-order decisions and selection questions

One of the main issues for the opening ODI is who will partner Quinton de Kock at the top. Bavuma said he will most likely bat in the top three, but the exact position is still unsettled. Tony de Zorzi is another option, while Aiden Markram is only available for the second and third matches, which adds more movement to the batting plan.

The bowling unit has also changed. Gerald Coetzee has been recalled to the ODI setup, while Kagiso Rabada is unavailable because of injury, although he remains hopeful of being fit for the Test matches that follow. The pace group for the series includes Ottneil Baartman, Kwena Maphaka, Lungi Ngidi, Corbin Bosch, Marco Jansen and Coetzee.

Dewald Brevis has been left out, with Matthew Breetzke, David Miller and Tristan Stubbs chosen for the middle order instead. South Africa have also selected Bjorn Fortuin and Keshav Maharaj as their specialist spin options.

Tests waiting in the background

Although the focus is on the ODIs for now, the three-Test series that follows is already difficult to ignore. It will count toward the ICC World Test Championship and will be the first meeting between the teams since South Africa beat Australia in the 2025 WTC Final at Lord’s.

Bavuma admitted that talk of the Test series keeps surfacing even while the squad is in white-ball mode. He called the meeting highly anticipated and said both sides, if fully fit, should produce a proper contest. For the moment, though, he wants the players to keep that excitement in check until the Tests arrive.

South Africa and Australia have played 113 ODIs in all. The Proteas hold a 57-52 advantage, with three matches tied and one abandoned, and they also lead the home record 28-22.

Series dates and squad lists

  1. The first ODI is in Durban on September 24.
  2. The second ODI follows in Johannesburg on September 27.
  3. The third ODI is scheduled for Potchefstroom on September 30.
  4. The first Test is in Durban from October 9 to 13.
  5. The second Test is in Gqeberha from October 18 to 22.
  6. The third Test is in Johannesburg from October 27 to 31.

South Africa: Temba Bavuma (c), Ottneil Baartman, Corbin Bosch, Matthew Breetzke, Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Tony de Zorzi, Bjorn Fortuin, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kwena Maphaka, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs.

Australia: Mitchell Marsh, Pat Cummins, Xavier Bartlett, Alex Carey, Cooper Connolly, Joel Davies, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Oliver Peake, Matthew Renshaw, Billy Stanlake, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa.

Durban therefore opens both parts of the tour, with the first ODI and the first Test staged at the same ground. Between now and the Test opener on October 9, South Africa still need to settle de Kock’s opening partner, manage Markram’s return, and see whether Rabada is ready to come back into the red-ball side. By the time the England series is complete later in the season, the Proteas should have a much clearer picture of their World Cup group.
