Edmonton’s Perfect Response Ends Calgary’s Hot Streak

Connor McDavid delivered another landmark performance as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Calgary Flames 4-0 on October 28, 2026. The result gave Edmonton a much-needed win after two straight losses and added another memorable chapter to the Battle of Alberta.

McDavid recorded two assists, including one that extended his assist streak to begin the season to 13 games, the longest such run in NHL history. Tristan Jarry supplied the other major highlight, stopping all 24 shots for his first shutout of the season and the 24th of his career.

McDavid Sets a New Season-Opening Mark

McDavid began the night tied with Wayne Gretzky, Ken Linseman and Sebastian Aho, each of whom had recorded assists in 12 consecutive games to open an NHL season. His first helper of the evening, on Mathieu Joseph’s goal, moved him past that group.

The Edmonton captain later assisted on Kasperi Kapanen’s third-period power-play goal. He now leads the league with 36 points, including eight goals and 28 assists through 13 games.

His production has been especially valuable because it reflects more than finishing ability. McDavid’s speed and vision force defenses to react, creating space for teammates throughout the lineup.

A Complete Team Performance in Edmonton

The Oilers did not depend on McDavid alone. Four players scored, while Edmonton’s defensive structure prevented Calgary from building sustained pressure.

Category Edmonton Calgary
Final score 4 0
Shots on goal Not specified 24
Goals Joseph, Ekholm, Kapanen, Formenton None
Goaltending Tristan Jarry, 24 saves Devin Cooley and Dustin Wolf
Team record after game 9-2-2 5-7-0

Mathieu Joseph opened the scoring before Mattias Ekholm added another Edmonton goal. Kapanen’s power-play tally and Alex Formenton’s finish completed the four-goal effort. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also contributed two assists, giving Edmonton additional playmaking beyond its captain.

  • Offensive variety: Edmonton received goals from four different players.
  • Special-teams execution: Kapanen scored with the man advantage in the third period.
  • Defensive control: Calgary was held scoreless for the entire game.

Jarry Provides the Stability Edmonton Needed

Jarry’s performance made the Oilers’ victory decisive. He handled every Calgary attempt and gave his team the confidence to play aggressively without sacrificing defensive discipline.

For Edmonton, the shutout arrived at an important time. The Oilers had dropped their previous two games, and a strong showing from the crease helped restore momentum during the final contest of their homestand.

Calgary’s attack never found a consistent rhythm, although Jarry still had to remain sharp against a rival capable of creating dangerous chances. His 24-save effort ended the game without a late rally or defensive panic.

Flames Lose Momentum After Four Wins

Calgary entered Rogers Place with considerable confidence. The Flames had won four consecutive games and five of their last six, but Edmonton quickly disrupted that progress.

The Flames also lost their starting goaltender during the opening period. Devin Cooley left with a lower-body injury, allowing Dustin Wolf to take over. Wolf made 20 saves after entering the game, while forward Brennan Othmann departed with an upper-body injury.

The 4-0 defeat dropped Calgary to 5-7-0. The team’s next challenge will be to separate this difficult rivalry loss from the encouraging stretch that came before it.

Next Tests for Both Alberta Teams

Calgary will return home to face the Seattle Kraken on October 30, giving the Flames an immediate opportunity to regain their rhythm. Edmonton will visit the New York Islanders on October 31.

McDavid will draw most of the attention in Edmonton’s next game. With his assist streak already at 13 games, every additional helper would extend a record that he established against one of the Oilers’ biggest rivals.

The larger takeaway is equally encouraging for Edmonton. The team combined elite playmaking, secondary scoring and reliable goaltending in the same performance. If those elements continue to appear together, the Oilers will remain one of the Western Conference’s most dangerous teams.
