The NHL’s Frozen Frenzy returns Tuesday, Oct. 13, bringing every one of the league’s 32 teams into action across 16 games. With staggered puck drops, national broadcasts and constant scoreboard movement, the event offers a fast look at the early shape of the 2026–27 season.
The previous edition delivered 109 goals in 16 games, with visiting teams finishing 9-6-1 and five contests requiring overtime or a shootout. Another high-volume night could reveal which clubs are genuine contenders, which are already chasing answers and which remain impossible to predict.
ESPN’s featured tripleheader begins in Detroit and carries viewers through the late West Coast finale:
The remaining 13 games begin at intervals of at least 15 minutes, making it possible to follow the entire slate through NHL Power Play on the ESPN App. ESPN2, Disney+ and the ESPN App will also carry five hours of whip-around coverage hosted by John Buccigross and Kevin Weekes.
Boston enters the night with David Pastrnak wearing the captain’s “C,” becoming the 28th captain in Bruins history. His record makes the choice easy to understand: since 2022–23, he has recorded four consecutive 100-point seasons, collecting 436 points in 329 games, including 254 goals. Pavel Zacha ranks second for Boston during that span, 206 points behind Pastrnak.
Detroit’s situation is considerably more turbulent. Dylan Larkin requested a trade while five seasons remained on his contract, and the Red Wings removed him as captain after he returned. He was booed by home supporters while injured and in street clothes, but Montreal fans later welcomed him with chants of “We want Larkin!”
Other Atlantic matchups carry their own hooks:
Carolina arrives as the defending champion and one of the league’s strongest early teams, earning 11 of a possible 14 points. Sebastian Aho has led the attack with six goals and five assists. The Hurricanes’ only regulation defeat came against Washington, setting up an immediate rematch on Frenzy night.
The Rangers face a major challenge in goal after Igor Shesterkin sustained a season-ending knee injury following five games. New York has turned to 24-year-old Dylan Garand to handle the crease.
Philadelphia’s opening has been far worse. The Flyers began 0-7, and frustrated supporters have already been heard chanting “Fire Tocchet!” Their next opponent is Seattle, adding another difficult test to a troubled start.
Washington supplies the evening’s most emotional storyline. Alex Ovechkin has confirmed that this will be his final season with the Capitals, and the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer has already opened his account for the season.
The Central and Pacific divisions add several compelling individual angles to an already crowded schedule. Jack Eichel has produced 12 points in six games while pursuing the first 100-point campaign in Golden Knights history. San Jose’s 20-year-old Macklin Celebrini is coming off a 115-point season and a fourth-place finish in MVP voting.
Edmonton remains a Western Conference favourite with Connor McDavid leading a roster coached by Mike Babcock. The Oilers meet a strong Utah Mammoth team, while Winnipeg works without suspended goaltender Connor Hellebuyck and relies on Stuart Skinner, who has posted a .920 save percentage.
Several veteran matchups also deserve attention. Patrick Kane returns to Chicago, where he won three Stanley Cups, while Sidney Crosby enters the night still searching for his first goal after six games and two assists. Vancouver’s Elias Pettersson has offered encouragement with eight points in seven games, and Dallas is watching Jason Robertson closely as the pending unrestricted free agent builds his case for a major contract.
Frozen Frenzy is designed for fans who enjoy following several stories at once. The staggered schedule keeps new games arriving while earlier contests reach their decisive moments, creating a continuous stream of goals, injuries, milestones and momentum swings.
From Pastrnak’s new leadership role and Ovechkin’s farewell season to the Crosby–Kane reunion and the league’s emerging young stars, the event packs nearly every major early-season question into one night. Sixteen simultaneous matchups make the NHL’s annual show hectic, but that overload is precisely its appeal.
