Bell Centre Test: Montreal’s Season Opener Carries Real Stakes

A rare opening-night matchup with playoff baggage

The Montreal Canadiens welcome the Carolina Hurricanes to the Bell Centre on Tuesday, October 6, at 7 p.m. ET for their 2026-27 home opener. The game comes with extra weight because it is also a rematch of the 2026 Eastern Conference Final, a series Carolina won on its way to the Stanley Cup.

That combination makes this one of the most intriguing early-season games on the schedule. Montreal gets its first home-ice chance to measure itself against the defending champions, while Carolina arrives with the confidence of a team that already knocked the Canadiens out in the spring.

The Hurricanes also have a notable bit of history on their side: this is the first time Carolina has visited Montreal for a home opener since October 13, 2007.

What Montreal learned from the Pittsburgh game

The Canadiens enter the matchup after a dramatic 6-5 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Montreal trailed by four goals in the second period, then stormed back to force extra time before falling late.

Nick Suzuki led the comeback effort with one goal and three assists, Cole Caufield scored twice, and Lane Hutson added three assists. Ivan Demidov and Chris Kreider also found the net as Montreal showed how explosive its offense can be when it starts to click.

Even with that rally, the game exposed the danger of slow starts and loose defending. Montreal cannot expect to dig out of a similar hole against a Carolina team that is more disciplined, deeper, and far more difficult to chase.

  1. Montreal must avoid early turnovers that feed Carolina’s transition game.
  2. The Canadiens need cleaner coverage around the slot and crease.
  3. Penalty trouble would only make the challenge steeper against a champion-level opponent.

Key Montreal players who can swing the night

Nick Suzuki is the most important name to watch. He has already shown he can drive play, create chances, and connect Montreal’s top scorers, and his four-point outing against Pittsburgh was a reminder of how much offense runs through him.

Cole Caufield remains the most likely pure goal scorer on the roster. His two-goal game against the Penguins reinforced how quickly he can punish a defense when he gets space in the attacking zone.

Lane Hutson could matter just as much from the blue line. His three-assist performance gave Montreal another dangerous puck-mover, and that kind of creativity will be valuable against Carolina’s aggressive pressure.

If Montreal finds a way to control the puck for longer stretches, those three players should be at the center of it.

Why Carolina still looks like the safer pick

Carolina’s playoff run against Montreal showed exactly why the Hurricanes are so hard to beat. They took the series in five games and finished it with a 6-1 win in Game 5 before going on to win the championship.

That experience matters again here. The Hurricanes can attack in waves, lean on a deep roster, and force opponents to defend for long stretches without much relief.

Montreal has enough talent to create problems, but Carolina’s structure and depth make the margin for error very small. If the Canadiens fall behind early, the Hurricanes are well equipped to control the tempo and close the door.

Prediction and final outlook

This has the feel of a game that stays competitive into the third period. Montreal’s offense is good enough to keep things interesting, especially in front of a loud Bell Centre crowd, but Carolina’s championship experience gives it the edge.

Prediction: Hurricanes 4, Canadiens 3

Most likely Montreal scorer: Cole Caufield

Player to watch: Nick Suzuki

For Montreal to pull off the upset, it needs a more composed defensive showing than it delivered in Pittsburgh and a fast start that lets the crowd stay fully engaged. If the Canadiens can do that, this home opener could become one of the early highlights of the NHL season.
